Beetles

There are over 4,000 species of beetle in the UK. They can be found in a wide variety of habitats on land and in freshwater. Beetles belong to a group of insects called Coleoptera.

Below are some of the beetles our Identification and Advisory Service team is most often asked about. Select one to find out more, including identification clues.

Beetles have pincer-shaped jaws and hard wing cases that meet in a T-shape

Key features of beetles:

  • 6 legs
  • Pincer-shaped jaws (these can be hard to see on smaller beetles)
  • Hard forewing cases (elytra) to protect the delicate hindwings
  • Wing cases that meet in a straight line, making a T-shape
