Stone spider, Drassodes lapidosus

Body size

Female to 18mm; male to 12mm.

Appearance

Buff-coloured with a low, silky-brown carapace, dark jaws and a pale, elongate abdomen. The legs are pale brown and 2 of the 8 eyes are silvery (photo).

Habitat, range and season

A nocturnal hunter which spends the day in a silken retreat (sac) under stones or loose bark. Europe, N Africa and much of Asia to Japan. Adult females all year; males from April to November.
