Between 1.4 and 1.8 million species (distinct types) of living organisms have so far been named. But some scientists believe that this may be as little as 10 per cent of the total number of species in the world.

 

The table below shows numbers of terrestrial and freshwater species in the UK compared with recent global estimates of described species in major groups.
