Finding food
The tail of a whale leaping from the ocean. When the whale dies, its carcass provides a feast for organisms living on the ocean floor.
Food is scarce in the deep sea. There is no sunlight and so photosynthesis, and the production of new food, is impossible. So how do deep sea creatures survive?
To find enough to eat, many deep sea animals, including sponges, sea anemones, tube worms and barnacles simply wait on the sea floor until food drops down from above or is carried to them in an ocean current.
When a large animal like a squid, shark, dolphin or whales dies, its carcass will sink down to the ocean floor, providing a feast for creatures down below.
