Distribution

The cockchafer, Melolontha melolontha, is found in:

  • Europe
  • Northern Asia
  • Mediterranean Basin
  • UK, where it is more common in the south than in the north

Habitat

Adult cockchafer beetles are associated with deciduous woodland. The grubs occur in nearby gardens, pastures, parks and nurseries.

Conservation

No action has been taken to conserve this species because when present in large numbers it can be a serious pest.
