Black garden ant, Lasius niger

One of the most common species in Britain, the black garden ant nests in lawns, paving cracks and under stones, and will often enter houses. Their colonies can grow to include up to 10,000 workers.

They like anything sweet like ripe fruits and ‘milk’ the honeydew from aphids.

Winged ants emerge for mating flights during the summer months.
