Culiseta annulata is one of the largest species of mosquito. It is widespread in Britain, especially in the south east. This species is characterised by spots on its wings, bold bands on its legs and abdomen and a long, forward pointing proboscis (tubular mouthpart). The female will freely attack humans to suck blood while the male feeds on nectar. Adults can be seen from spring to autumn when they hibernate over winter, often in buildings. This species does not carry malaria.
