Rose sawfly, Arge pagana

Sawflies are often described as stingless wasps. They have a saw-like structure at the end of their abdomen for cutting the host plant, into which they lays their eggs. The rose sawfly is a common garden species, which lays its eggs on roses. This striking insect is black with a large, rounded yellow abdomen and is common throughout Britain, especially in the south.
