Common pill woodlouse, Armadillidium vulgare

The common pill woodlouse is widespread and usually grey in colour but less common forms can be found in shades of pink, orange and brown. When disturbed it rolls up into a ball to protect itself.

The pill millipede looks very similar to the pill woodlouse and also rolls up into a ball. However, you can tell them apart as woodlice only have 7 pairs of legs, whereas pill millipedes have a lot more than this. Also, all of the segments of the millipede are roughly the same length, whereas they are shorter and packed more tightly together at one end of the pill woodlouse.
