Scientists spend days, months or even years analysing the data they have collected in the field or lab, in a quest to find the evidence to prove their ideas. Sometimes the data can produce unexpected results, which may change the way they need to be interpreted, but this can be very exciting.
Getting a new result is only the beginning. In this video Museum plant researcher Karen James talks about her orchid research and describes the roller-coaster ride of getting her results accepted by the global scientific community, and published.
'The most exciting thing for me about science is when you get a new result and, even though it may just be a small advance, for a few days or weeks you are the only person on earth who knows about it.' says Karen James.
