In north-western Europe, it is an indicator for

  • calcareous dry grasslands 
  • sunny, rocky habitats

and worthy of conservation efforts. 

The vast majority of sites where Pleurochaete squarrosa is found are located within nature reserves, reducing the threat to the species.
