Convolvulus vidalii

Convolvulus vidalii is a bindweed that is found in only one location in Morocco. Convolvulus vidalii and its close relatives are not found anywhere else in the world.

Convolvulus vidalii is typically found on rocky limestone slopes.

The bindweed (Convolvulus) that people are probably most familiar with is Convolvulus arvenisis, the field bindweed. With its deep underground rhizomes that are extremely difficult to eradicate and its scrambling, choking habit, Convolvulus arvenisis is the bane of gardeners’ and farmers’ lives around the globe. Its attractive flowers belie its status as one of the world’s ten worst weeds (Holm et al, 1977).

However, Convolvulus arvensis is unusual among the 200 species of Convolvulus worldwide. Many species are very rare, restricted in distribution to just a small geographical area, and potentially threatened by human activity. Convolvulus vidalii is among the rarest.
