The genus Cercomonas comprises over 50 species, although there are likely to be hundreds more yet to be described.

  • extremely variable in shape, which makes them hard to describe scientifically.

The genus Cercomonas belongs to the protozoan phylum Cercozoa.The Cercozoa was only described recently but includes tens of thousands, if not millions of species found in almost every habitat on earth.
