Conservation status

The IUCN lists this species as ‘Least Concern’ in view of its wide distribution in one of the most pristine areas of the Amazon basin, and its having been recorded as relatively locally abundant .(IUCN, 2009).

Bradypus tridactylus are widespread and locally abundant within a spectrum of protected areas, from inner city parks to wilderness reserves (Vizcaino & Loughry, 2008).

Threats

All species of Bradypus may be threatened by habitat destruction and excessive hunting (Nowak, 1999).

The main predators are the

  • jaguar 
  • ocelot
  • anaconda
  • harpy eagle
  • margay cat
