The giant horsetail prefers fertile wet soil and is found in tropical and subtropical forests, usually along streams, or along wet roadsides and in swamps at altitudes of between 200 - 3,000m. The giant horsetail is an abundant species, especially in Mexico and Central America.
Not threatened. Populations are stable, but new localities continue to be found.
