Habitat

The African lung fish lives in slow-moving, freshwater river and lake systems.

It has poor eyesight, and tends to live in fairly stagnant water where visibility is limited.

Nutrition

The lungfish relies on smell and touch to find food. It feeds on molluscs, frogs, fish, seeds, roots and other plant material.

When feeding, Protopterus moves the food item across the tooth-plates by partially spitting it out before sucking it back in again.

Chewing involves the whole skull and the eyes will visibly retract into the skull when biting down.
