Distribution and ecology

Distribution

All wombats (fossil and extinct) have only been found in Australia.

Rhizophascolonus crowcrofti is known from two localities within Australia:

  • Tirari Desert in South Australia
  • Riversleigh World Heritage fossil site in northwestern Queensland

This species lived between 25 and 15 million years ago.

Habitat

Modern wombats burrow underground. It is not known whether Rhizophascolonus crowcrofti also burrowed.

Trophic strategy

Grass comprises a significant portion of the diet of modern wombats. This diet means that the teeth of modern wombats wear very quickly (this is why they have ever-growing teeth).

Although the teeth of Rhizophascolonus crowcrofti did not grow throughout life (as they possessed tooth roots) their molars are very worn. This means that they probably ate abrasive material such as plant roots.
