Tips and inspiration

  • Whether you choose to learn the common, scientific or traditional names for plants and wildlife, it can bring you closer to the nature around you.
  • You don’t have to travel far to get started. Explore a nearby park or your favourite walking route and take note of the plants and animals that catch your eye. Take photos or keep a notepad with you and write down their features.
  • Check out our free nature ID guides. Plus, keep an eye out for identification and field guides either in charity shops or on second-hand book websites such as World of Books
  • Download apps such as Seek, PlantNet or Merlin Bird ID, which make it easy to identify plants, insects and animals using your phone’s camera and microphone.

Why is this action beneficial?

By learning to recognise different plants and animals, you’ll develop your ability to observe their characteristics and habitats. Plus, learning how to use field guides is a useful skill. You can use these skills to take part in a nature survey and contribute to important scientific research.

Understanding the plants and wildlife in your area helps you to recognise changes in your local environment. This knowledge can inspire you to take further action for nature such as supporting conservation efforts or making you garden wildlife friendly.

Learning the names of local animals and plants gives you an insight into the roles different species play in your local environment and the challenges they face. Plus, discovering the rich cultural folklore that surrounds plants and their traditional medicinal uses can provide you with a different perspective on the nature around you.
