Tips and inspiration
- You don’t need to be a scientist to carry out nature research. Researchers need help collecting large amounts of data on species numbers and locations and that’s where you come in.
- Dive deeper into something you’re interested in! Perhaps you love birdwatching or exploring the seashore. If so, then maybe the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch or our Big Seaweed Search could be for you. Find other surveys on our website.
- Use apps like iNaturalist or iRecord to identify species and log your discoveries. Read our Introduction to biological recording article for details on how to record your observations.
- Join a BioBlitz. These 24-hour events bring people together to spot and record as many species as possible in one area. Follow @NHM_CitSci on X for upcoming opportunities.
- Check out our survey calendar to find activities and monitoring schemes to join throughout the year.
Why is this action beneficial?
Protect nature
Helping monitor nature can identify species at risk so they can be targeted for future scientific research and government policy. This data can also inform conservation practice, local planning and land management.
Learn a new skill
Whether it’s identifying bird calls, recognising tree species or learning how to conduct field research, nature surveys offer a fantastic opportunity to sharpen and practice your observation skills.
Improve health
Helping to monitor wildlife and plants is a great way to connect with nature. Taking the time to notice the pollinators in your garden or searching for ancient trees can be a very mindful practice that deepens your appreciation for the ecosystems around you.
Become more informed
Taking part in a survey deepens your understanding of local wildlife and the challenges it faces. You’ll gain a new perspective on the ecosystems around you and feel empowered to take further action to protect them.
