Map of key archaeological sites

Nearly one million years ago, a natural land bridge allowed humans to cross to Britain from continental Europe, beginning the first of many waves of occupation. Thick ice sheets swept across Britain during glacial periods, eroding evidence of human activity in the north. Traces of human presence in more favourable times remain in the south.

Explore some of the important archaeological sites and discoveries from the Ancient Human Occupation of Britain (AHOB) project and other excavations.
