Volucella larvae develop in wasp nests over winter where they parasitise wasp larvae and scavenge for debris that accumulates at the bottom of the nest. They pupate in spring and emerge as beautiful wasp mimics (hover flies). The larva of Volucella inanis is different from all other Volucella species as it is has a smooth, flattened body. V. inanis is mainly found in southern Britain, especially in the suburbs around London.
