A large and impressive species, the tube web spider has a black or dark-brown cigar-shaped body. Some individuals show green iridescence on the jaws.
Originally a native of southern Europe, this spider is an introduced species in the UK and is only found in southern England and Wales near to ports.
The nocturnal adults occur from June to November and live in walls, fences, and under the bark of trees. The 'tube-web' occupies a hole or crevice and has trip-lines radiating out, which detect prey.
