Greater water boatman, Notonecta glauca
Commonly called backswimmers as they swim at the water’s surface on their backs, this species is common and widespread across the UK. It is light brown in colour with large red eyes and has long, powerful hind legs modified for swimming. Water boatmen are around 20mm in length and can attack prey as large as tadpoles and small fish.
