Ivy is native to Europe and western Asia, occurring in woods, hedges and rocky areas. It grows up any suitable surface or creeps along the ground.
It thrives on all but the driest, most water-logged or very acid soils and is very tolerant of shade.
It has been introduced to many countries, notably the USA and Australia.
