Ilex paraguariensis flowers during the first month of spring.
Pollination is entomophilous - the pollen is carried by insects, in this case by bees and flies.
The fruit is a showy, dark red or purple small drupe that ripens throughout the autumn. Ilex paraguariensis is dispersed by birds which eat the fruits and subsequently pass the seeds out in their faeces.
