Aye ayes can be found along the entire east coast of Madagascar and have been sighted in other parts of Madagascar.
Their preferred habitat is moist forest but aye ayes also occur in dry forests and in cultivated areas, which brings them into conflict with humans.
Sightings of aye ayes are rare through most of its natural range. But signs of their presence include:
- nests
- gnaw marks on trees
- gnaw mark on ramy nuts
