Biology and behaviour

Very little is known about he biology or behaviour of Laonastes aenigmamus

The available information is derived from bushmeat specimens purchased from local markets and conversation with local people.

The rock rats appear to be

  • nocturnal.
  • predominantly herbivores, eating
    • leaves
    • grass
    • seeds
    • possibly insects , but probably not in high abundance
  • quite docile and slow moving over open ground
Reproduction

Little is known about the reproductive biology of this animal. A pregnant female was found to contain a single foetus and reports from local people suggest that a single infant is the norm. So females may give birth to a single young (Jenkins et al., 2005).
