This species is narrowly endemic to the mountainous regions of the extreme south-east of Andalusia, and it is considered vulnerable to the threat of extinction, as the area of occupancy of its geographic range is fragmented and in continuing decline. For these reasons this species meets the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria for vulnerable (VU) status, and has been listed in the 2008 IUCN Red List of the vascular plants flora of Spain.
