Using special tagging devices it is possible to record the movements of animals.
Adults are capable of dispersing widely throughout the North Sea but more usually stay 5-20km around their haul-out sites, diving and locally foraging for food.
British and Danish populations often intermingle and in so doing sometimes spread viral distemper.
