Deforestation is likely to present the greatest threat to the survival of this enigmatic bird and further study into its life cycle and habitat requirements are urgently needed.
Now Rigidipenna inexpectata has been correctly identified as a species within its own genus, and its vocalisations are known, more and more bird-watchers and ornithologists are spending time searching for it when they visit the Solomons.
This increased effort should reveal a wealth of new information that may be of utmost importance when putting in place any future protection measures.
