Historically, S. aloides was an abundant species in shallow surface waters in the British Isles and Europe.
Currently the species is declining and has almost disappeared from British shallow lakes, where it originally occupied vast areas.
Cultural eutrophication - an increase in the concentration of chemical nutrients from human activities - is contributing to the species decline.
