Taxonomy

The genus Anthracocentrus belongs to the subfamily Prioninae, which contains the largest longhorn beetles of all, including the largest known beetle species, Titanus giganteus - a denizen of the Amazonian rainforest.

There are several closely related species of Anthracocentrus that are very similar to A. arabicus, but that occur in other parts of the world. These include:

  • Anthracocentrus rugiceps from Iran and Pakistan
  • Anthracocentrus modicus from Pakistan and northern India
  • Anthracocentrus capensis from south-western Africa
  • Anthracocentrus beringei from eastern Africa
  • Anthracocentrus nigerianus  from west Africa
