Euphrasia grandiflora
Euphrasia grandiflora is listed under annex 1 of the Bern Convention (1979) and also the Habitats Directive.
The species is categorised as ‘endangered’ under current IUCN criteria, based on total population size.
Little is known about its biology or effective conservation management methods.
It is not currently cultivated, and because of its hemiparasitic nature is likely to prove difficult to cultivate away from its natural habitat.
Threats
Euphrasia grandiflora is threatened by habitat degradation, the expansion of agricultural land and forestry.
Because its populations are small and fragmented, it is also affected by random events and possibly genetic factors - floral abnormalities in the smaller Pico population may be a consequence of inbreeding depression.
Its striking appearance also makes it vulnerable to collection and trampling.
