Dimorphodon macronyx is known from three skeletons and other isolated bones found at Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK.

The rocks are limestone and shale known as the Lower Lias, which formed during the Lower Jurassic Period - 200 million years ago - on the bed of a shallow continental sea.

Most of the fossils in these rocks are the remains of sea creatures such as fish, ammonites, and most famously, marine reptiles such as ichthyosaurs.
