Populations of both the Asian and African elephant are considered endangered.
Haematomyzus elephantis can only survive on elephants so a similar status should be ascribed to this louse in areas where the host population is endangered.
The elephant louse is capable of reproducing in large numbers, so it is only in danger of extinction if elephant populations are lost.
