Microcystis aeruginosa is a cosmopolitan species and very common in temperate and tropical regions.
It is commonly found in fresh and brakish water bodies.
It grows especially well in water that is nutrient rich, warm and stagnant, and sometimes forms thick blooms.
Blooms can become a problem for water quality and management.
