Because of its medicinal value, this species is now subject to intensive bio-prospecting and harvesting from the wild with the risk of over-exploitation, illlegal trade and even extinction.
Due to overgrazing by sheep and goats, this species has already disappeared from some parts of Africa where it was formerly abundant.
Most species of Hoodia are legally protected under Cites (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) regulations in Africa, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.
