Knot grass moth caterpillar, Acronicta rumicis

These caterpillars are mostly black, with yellow tufts of hair. Along its sides there are red and white marks. 

The caterpillar feeds on lots of different plants that are found in gardens. 

This species is common and widespread throughout the UK, although less frequent in Scotland. Adult moths can be found from May to July.
