Broad-bodied chaser dragonfly, Libellula depressa

Found in southern England and Wales, this dragonfly has a very broad, flat abdomen.

The males have a pale blue abdomen, while the females have a yellowish-brown one. Both have yellow spots down their sides

The broad-bodied chaser favours newly-created ponds or those which are not over vegetated. Flying between late May and early August, the territorial male can often be spotted at the water’s edge ready to attack another male if approached.
