Varying in colour from pale yellow to dark brown, the garden spider typically has pale markings on its abdomen in the shape of a cross and is also known as the cross spider.
This spider is found in nearly every country in the northern hemisphere and is the most well-known spider in the UK.
It feeds on flying insects caught in its familiar orb web and the female, which constructs the web, is often seen upside down in the centre.
