The Chaco region is being opened up for farming and ranching, and as a result the Chacoan peccary is not only losing its habitat, but is also becoming more vulnerable to hunting.
Diseases from domestic pigs are also having a marked effect on numbers. The peccary does not breed well in captivity and although some efforts have been made to segregate areas where the peccary still exists, such as national parks, they are poorly protected.
