Evolution, genetics and lookalikes

Evolution

The genus Nectphrynoides originally included species now placed in separate genera - Altiphrynoides, Nimbaphrynoides and Spinophrynoides.

The relationships of species within Nectophrnoides in its present restricted sense and with these separate genera need to be re-examined.

Genetics

Karyotype, not known.

Since the global population of this species is a single population and there is no opportunity for genetic exchange/outcrossing, a high level of homozygosity would be expected, making them still more vulnerable to extinction.

Lookalikes

Readily distinguished from other Nectophryroides toads by its general appearance and in particular by the well-defined snout, the white line along the margin of the snout, crimson throat, brown smudge marking on the chest and the palms of the hands, soles of the feet and the pelvic patch which have a dark chocolate brown ground colour and distinctive white tubercles.
