Nannocharax signifer is distinguishable from all other Nannocharax species in West Africa by the red-orange colouration on the anterior half of the dorsal fin.
Nannocharax signifer is one of 29 known Nannocharax species
Only one other Nannocharax species, Nannocharax occidentalis has been found in the Ouémé River basin.
