Palaeoenvironment

Nannoceratopsis is a ubiquitous dinoflagellate.

We know Nannoceratopsis from:

  • fully marine environments
  • very proximal, nearshore environments where other dinoflagellate cysts do not occur

It has therefore been suggested that Nannoceratopsis was euryhaline, which means able to adapt to a wide range of salinities.

It is often the only dinoflagellate cyst to be found in the Middle Jurassic sandstone deposits of the North Sea, indicating a marine depositional setting.
