Case bearing clothes moth, Tinea pellionella

This common household moth has a jerky flight often preferring to crawl and skip along the floor rather than fly with any finesse. Mainly brown with black spots on its wing this species is widespread throughout the British Isles. However, it is not the adult moth that does the damage but their larvae, which feeds on organic materials including woollen carpets and clothes made from natural fibres. The larvae live in cases made of the fibres of the material they are feeding on so can be difficult to spot. A good vacuum cleaner is all that is required, or a couple of squirts of proprietary insecticide would help get rid of them.
