Thrip, Order Thysanoptera

Otherwise known as thunderbugs or thunderflies, these tiny insects have characteristic fringed wings and around 5,000 species have been discovered so far. Some thrip species can be extraordinarily numerous on cereal crops, and when these are harvested can disperse causing a nuisance in homes nearby. They are not parasites but can probe around with their pointed mouthparts and deliver a sharp prick, but they are otherwise harmless. Other species of thrip feed on insects or mites and are considered benefical.
