Hummingbird hawk-moth, Macroglossum stellatarum

This hawk-moth is unusual in that it flies during the day and hovers in front of flowers like a hummingbird, sipping the nectar with its long proboscis. It also sounds like a hummingbird as it beats its wings so fast they produce a hum. This moth is an immigrant species which arrives in the summer from mainland Europe. Remarkably, the hummingbird moth has an amazing memory as it returns to the same flowerbeds at the same time everyday.
