A common species in Europe, the large yellow underwing is probably the most common of the bigger moths found in the UK. It varies in colour although its yellow hindwings, which have a black border, usually remains consistent. There are 6 species of underwing in the UK, which can prove difficult to tell apart. However, this species is larger than most, reaching a length of 55mm. Underwings rest during the day but will flash their yellow hindwings to scare of predators if threatened.
