Agrias is perhaps one of the most beautiful, colourful and popular genus of butterflies. This genus is closely related to Prepona, another group of large, colourful and canopy-lover butterflies. Species of this genus can be recognised from the strongly patterned versos. Females are distinctive of males. The taxonomy in this group is being misled by urgency of private collectors to name every form or aberration, in this, a very variable in appearance group. Although there are currently only 5 valid subspecies recognised (Lamas 2004) in this group, more than 200 forms, aberrations, variations etc. has been described.
