Doryopteris majestosa is relatively widely distributed in east and central South America.
It ranges from north-eastern Brazil (Bahia) towards south-eastern and south Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul). It is also found in the Brazilian states Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul.
It is also encountered in Paraguay, Argentina and south-eastern Bolivia.
Doryopteris majestosa occurs in a variety of habitats - from the Atlantic to secondary forest (though not open and disturbed areas). It can also be found in Parana pine forest (known as Mata de Araucaria in south Brazil).
The species can usually be found growing alongside streams and near forest borders.
It usually grows in large populations, with terrestrial and occasionally rupicolous habit.
